Isle of Lewis chess set
In 1831, a farmer on the Isle of Lewis, north of Scotland, discovered a centuries-old Viking chess set. Curators at the British Museum date it to 12th-century Norway. Our chessmen are exact replicas of the originals, even replicating the feel of handcarved walrus tusks. Pieces crafted in Europe from a durable crushed-stone and resin compound.
