Victorian-style Davenport writing desk
In 1790, Captain Josiah Davenport needed a compact writing desk, with plenty of storage space, for an upcoming trans-Atlantic ocean voyage. The efficient and stylish piece he commissioned became so popular that his furniture maker was soon overwhelmed with orders for "Davenports". Our re-creation has been faithfully handcrafted in solid mahogany. The upper, hinged section opens to reveal eight, divided compartments, originally intended for inkwells and quills. The sloping lid lifts on a hinge to expose eight, 4"x3"x1" pull-out drawers. And, you'll find four more 9"x8" drawers on the left and right sides. Old-fashioned craftsmanship, like dovetail joints, ornately carved legs and ball feet and antiqued, brass hardware, abound. Hand-rubbed finish. This piece is certain to be treasured for generations to come. Sensible size is ideal for bedroom, hall or study. 32"x23"x20". 35 lbs. This item requires $75 in addition to the standard delivery charge.
