Symbio is an external 160GB hard drive that works with the control functions in all 2004 Toshiba Integrated HDTV models. There is a simple one-wire connection, utilizing the TV's IEEE1394 port. Symbio utilizes the TV Guide On Screen system in the TV to allow for simple one touch recording of both standard and high definition TV content. The TV also has controls for pausing and rewinding live TV for total viewing flexibility. The Toshiba Symbio 160HD4 is a hard disk recorder designed exclusively for use with specific 2004-model Toshiba HDTVs. The audio/video hard drive (AVHD) recorder connects via a single IEEE-1394 Firewire cable, and can record high-definition or standard-definition television signals. Note: TV Guide On-Screen programming service is required in order for this product to operate. This service is not available in all areas. Compatible only with 2004 Toshiba televisions equipped with an HD tuner (models 62HM94, 52HM94, 46HM94, 57H94, 51H94, 57HX94, 51HX94, 62HMX94, and 52HMX94) Recording Rates: The AVHD unit can record HD and SD programming. Standard Definition programming is typically transmitted at 4 to 8 megabits per second, depending upon the content and provider. High Definition programming is typically transmitted at 19 megabits per second, and may require more than three times the space on the units hard drive as SD programming of the same length. Recording Capacity: The Symbio 160HD4s 160GB hard disk drive can record up to 16 hours of HD programming and up to 80 hours of SD programming. Actual recording times will vary depending upon the bit rate of the program being recorded. Analog and digital TV signals can be recorded. Note: The units 160GB hard drive is not all useable for recording; a portion of the drive space is allotted for directory information. TV Guide On-Screen: The AVHD recorder receives its commands from the TVs built-in TV Guide On-Screen program guide. Before you can record programs on the AVHD recorder, you must first complete the setup of the TV Guide On-Screen, if it is available in your area. The TVs supplied remote control (CT-90216) is required to operate this AVHD unit. Note: There is no monthly fee for the TV Guide On-Screen service. Controlling Live TV: As soon as the connected TV is tuned to a channel, the Symbio 160HD4 automatically starts recording the tuned program. It will continue recording up to 60 minutes to allow you to pause or "rewind" at any time while watching live TV, then resume playback from the point you paused or reversed, so you dont miss any portion of the program. If the unit is paused for more than 60 minutes, it will automatically begin playback 60 minutes behind live TV. If the hard drive is full, you will not be able to pause live TV. As soon as you change channels or input, the 60 minute buffer is lost and the recorder begins recording the newly tuned program.
