ABOUT THE REGION: Argentina is the 5th largest wine producing country in the world, yet so many of their wines are unknown to us. The reason is that most of the consumption was within the country until recently when Argentinean wineries began focusing on the export market. An interesting fact is Argentinean's annual wine consumption per person is 10 gallons compared to the US with 1-2 gallons per person. Argentineans sure know how to live the good life! ABOUT THE WINERY: Bodegas Valentin Bianchi is one of the most renowned wineries in Argentina. It was established by Don Valentin Bianchi in 1928 and today is still family owned and run by his sons and grandchildren. They own over 950 acres of vineyards located in the San Rafael Valley, south of the famous Mendoza region where they benefit from its relatively high altitude (2,400 feet above sea level) and is consequently one of the coolest sites in San Rafael. Winemakers Enzo Arnaldo Bianchi and Californian-born Robert Pepi produce a range of immaculately crafted wines that rank with the very best in Argentina today. Valentin Bianchi winery currently produces three labels for export: Elsa, Elsa's Vineyard and Famiglia Bianchi. ABOUT THE WINE: The color of this wine is soft yellow with a faint golden hue. Aromatically, it holds bright fruit notes intermingled with subtle nuances of oak. Alluring hints of vanilla, apples, and spices in the nose lead to similiar flavors on the palate, with the addition of coconut and cloves. There is a rich, silky mouth feel, with refreshing acidity and a long, pleasant finish. This is a great food wine that will complement many dishes. Try it with oysters, shrimp, pasta with cream sauce and smoky salmon, fish with butter or rich sauces, poultry, and aged cheeses. A delicious wine now, drink within 1-2 years.
