On June 20, 1863, West Virginia (the "Mountain State") became the 35th state admitted into the Union, making it the 35th coin to be issued in the United States Mint's popular program. This coin captures the scenic beauty of the state, depicting the New River and the New River Gorge Bridge. The coin bears the inscription "New River Gorge." Each quarter is designed and approved by the state it represents, uniquely providing insight into historical, scientific or cultural achievements. Since 1999, the U.S. government has issued a new state quarter approx. every 10 weeks in the order of their statehood.
