Tom Arnold stars as Stanley Stupid, the head of a typical suburban American family unfortunately filled with good-natured idiots who thoroughly live up to their name. When Mr. and Mrs. Stupid suspect someone of "stealing" their garbage, Stanley sets off to find the evil litter looter. In his effort to get to the bottom of this heinous crime, Stanley lays a cunning trap to lure back the thieves. As expected, they take the bait, and he follows their getaway truck to the dump where he inadvertently stumbles on a covert weapons deal led by a couple of military men gone bad. Completely oblivious to what the Colonel and his sidekick are up to, Stanley believes there is a more sinister element at work --that a diabolical figure from his past is behind the theft of all that fine garbage people have worked so hard to create. When the family reunites to track down the criminal, they are thoroughly convinced that they have discovered a bizarre conspiracy involving the police, the post office, the newspaper, international terrorists, the local Chinese restaurant.and aliens. As the family wreaks havoc and confusion throughout the city, the Stupid clan manages to come out on top through sheer dumb luck.
